Love your leftovers. Make Plant Food

Hot off the digital press! Here’s an article from Dr Darach Lupton, Head of Botany and Conservation Department at the Oman Botanic Garden, explaining how we might go about using our food waste to nourish our gardens by home composting. Composting is a local action that anyone with a little bit of outside space can have a go at! There are a number of areas of benefit ranging from reduced emissions impact, less waste, keeping it natural and organic all tying into climate action, responsible consumption and production and protecting life on land.  Staying local essentially decreases the use of transportation and packaging and therefore provides helps us establish better connection with our land and local environment and in so doing deepening a sustainable lifestyle. Within this lies the many benefits for the health both mental and physical as getting out and about in the garden is relaxing and a thorough form of exercise.

COMPOSTING. Verb. (1) make vegetable matter or manure into compost

What’s compost and Why compost?

So, what is compost? Compost is decomposed organic material, e.g. food waste, garden waste, paper, cardboard that can be added to soil to improve its quality by retaining moisture, suppressing plant pest and diseases and much, much more. Adding compost to your soil promotes the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break down organic material to create humus – a rich nutrient-filled material which greatly improves plant health and vigour. Home composting also significantly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.

Can I make it at home and how?

It is important to know that good compost is made up primarily of two components – Carbon and Nitrogen, often referred to as Browns (C) and Greens (N). Browns include things like, nutshells, dried leaves and dry grass, cut up cardboard and shredded paper; Greens include fresh leaves, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and eggshells (check on-line for a full list of Brown and Green materials). To promote compost production and to prevent the occurrence of bad smells you will need a ratio of about 25 Brown: 1 Green. A good rule of thumb is for every two-parts brown add one-part green. Achieving this balance will promote the growth of composting bacteria, which are essential to the entire process.

How to build a compost bin or pile?

The purpose of building a bin is to contain the compost material, so they can build up heat as the decomposition breaks down the organic matter. The bin should be big enough to allow you to turn the compost; this promotes aeration. Compost bins are simple, for example, many people fix four wood pallets together (the base is left open in contact with the ground). Purpose built compost bins or barrels can be purchased; these are sealed units, capable of producing compost quickly and are ideal for small gardens.

To encourage decomposition a compost bin requires about 50% moisture – here in the Gulf that’s a little challenging due to our warm climates so here’s a few tips help achieve this:

  • Locate your compost in the shade
  • Reduce the number of holes in the bin – this will reduce water loss
  • Don’t turn the compost too often – this can result in your compost drying out, particularly in the hot summer months – a good rule is to add water after turning.
  • Aerate the pile from time to time by adding bulky material, e.g. twigs, dry branches.

Common problems and how to avoid them?

Bugs! Notably fruit flies – these can be eliminated by simply covering freshly added food waste with 2 – 3cm of brown matter like dried leaves  الحشرات!

That’s a bit stinky! Ok…so let’s talk bad smells – bones or meat are a big no-no so do not put these onto your pile because these items will smell and attract vermin. Cover fresh food waste with dry brown matter, as explained above. If you start getting a strong bad smell then this usually means that there is too much green material so the remedy is to simply add more brown matter.

It’s too sticky! Sometimes you can develop sticky matted compost which usually happens if thick layers are added. The trick here is to simply break-up the chunky layer by mixing it in to your pile making sure to ensure the magic Brown to Green ratio is maintained.

Get your hands dirty and cultivate your green fingers as well as your garden

Get a feel for your compost – do not be afraid to handle and smell it. Once you have the process underway you will have a wonderful, rich source of nutrient and bulk for your garden soil – the plants will thank you and grow healthier and fuller with the food you have created for them.

Patience is a virtue…

All good things come to those who wait…the process takes time about 6 months to a year to get going so enjoy the process, enjoy the seasons and your contribution to making this world a little greener.
